Leather factories in Kanpur, Unnao and surrounding areas were closed for the last 7 months. The UP government had ordered the closure of the Kumbh fair. After seven months, the state government has given permission to re-open the leather factories with certain conditions. Under the condition, they will have to comply with the criteria set by National Green Authority (NGT).

The government has decided to set up a separate waste management plant in Jajmau of Kanpur so that the waste of leather factories can be prevented from falling directly into the Ganges river.

According to Vijay Vidya Pant, District Collector of Kanpur, the state government has approved the project of Rs 617 crore to stop the waste of leather factories from falling directly into the river Ganga. He said that out of the total sanctioned amount, Rs. 480 crores will be utilized for setting up the West Management Plant, while the balance will be used in the maintenance of the plant.

Significantly, the state government had ordered closure of about 260 factories of leather located on the banks of River Ganga in November last year to ensure hygiene of water in Ganga river for Kumbh Mela. This restriction was to shrink in March after the completion of the Kumbh Mela this year, but due to the ban the owners and laborers of leather factories suffered heavy losses.

The Kanpur Leather Industry has welcomed the decision of the state government to allow the factories to be reopened, but also urged to work fast to set up an effective waste management plant to prevent pollution.
